Doctors discover 4 bees living inside a woman's eye and feeding on her tears
The human being is subject to several infections, mainly because of the bacteria and parasites in his direct environment. This woman also believed in a simple eye infection, but what the doctors realized after the auscultation of her eye will not fail to leave you speechless. This unusual story is relayed by the British newspaper The Guardian.
If insects flying around you bother you, imagine for a moment that one of them can infiltrate your body. A young woman of 29 paid for it. The story is set in southern Taiwan, a first on the island according to BBC News.
An unusual story
As she was cleaning the tombstone of one of her relatives, she felt something stung inside her eye. A feeling of uneasiness ensued that the young woman identified as Mrs. He attributed to a grain of sand or dust. After rinsing her eye with water, the young Taiwanese continued to experience tingling and sharp eye pain. In addition to having watery eyes and swollen eyelid, a malaise that will push her very happily to see a doctor.
Dr. Hong Chi Ting, professor of ophthalmology at Fooyin University Hospital in southern Taiwan, took the young woman in charge. He was shocked at the real reason that explained his symptoms. After his auscultation and a microscope inspection, he told BBC News he noticed what looked like a black insect paw. By seizing the first to remove it, the expert was able to remove three others, to his surprise.
Sweat bees: what you need to know
The insects in question are bees measuring between 3 and 4 mm. Sometimes called "sweat bees", they feed mainly on sweat and, in some cases, tears. From the family Halictidae, they are considered a non-aggressive species attracted by human sweat.
In this case, they had infiltrated under the eyelid of the patient who, because of her contact lenses, avoided rubbing her eyes. An initiative that would have saved her from blindness, according to Dr. Hong, since by reacting like this, she avoided contact with bee venom that could have compromised her vision. An unprecedented case for this health professional who explains that this type of bees usually establish their hives in mountainous areas and near cemeteries.
What to do in case of eye inflammation?
Ocular inflammation can occur because of contamination, or by infiltration of a foreign body or parasite in the eye. There are some symptoms that indicate ocular inflammation, among which we can mention:
The redness of the eye
Secretions (if you have eyelids stuck in the morning)
Glare by the light
A sensation of sand under the eyelids
Pains
Swelling and redness of the eyelids
Drop in vision
The loss of vision, however, requires an emergency ophthalmological consultation. Regarding foreign body or parasite seepage, start by cleaning your eyes and making sure your hands are clean. Otherwise, try to do it without touching your eyes. The germs present in your hand can make the situation worse. If the pain persists despite this and the feeling of unease is increasing, do not rub your eyes. In case of infiltration of insects or parasites, this can cause the secretion of toxins or poisonous substances. Immediately make an appointment with an ophthalmologist preferably to consult the state of your eye, and avoid any risk for this vital organ.
