When to Take Magnesium? Benefits and Risks of This Modern Treatment

If you want to take magnesium supplements, it would be interesting for you to know more about its advantages, disadvantages and dosage, in order to get the most out of it. How can this food supplement be useful to you? Should it be taken before, after or during meals? Is it possible to mix it with other medications? Find all the answers to your questions below.

Magnesium Benefits

Professor Deborah Cohen, an associate professor in the Department of Clinical and Preventive Nutritional Sciences at Rutgers University School of Health Professions, tells us that magnesium is very beneficial for our health. In fact, it is the fourth most abundant element in the human body, after calcium, potassium, and sodium, and plays an important role in the composition of bones, soft tissues, and organs.

According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), magnesium is involved in more than 300 enzymatic reactions within our bodies. For example, it is responsible for its normal functioning, mainly in the regulation of fasting blood sugar, bone production, nerve and muscle function, and the slight reduction of migraines and headaches, adds Keri Gans, RD, author of The Small Change Diet .

When is the best time to take magnesium?

There’s no best time to take your daily dose of this supplement if you’re deficient in magnesium. It’ll give you its benefits no matter what time of day you take it, as long as you take it every day on a regular basis, says Gans. But it’s best to take it with or after a meal for better absorption, because on an empty stomach, magnesium supplements can cause digestive problems or diarrhea.

It’s also important to know that there are several types of magnesium, and each one affects our bodies differently. Here’s a list of the most common products you’ll find on the market.

Magnesium citrate: This form of magnesium is highly absorbable and is used for its laxative effects against occasional constipation. The time of day you take it doesn’t matter, says Jessica Cording, author of “The Little Book of Game Changers: 50 Healthy Habits to Manage Stress and Anxiety.” » This supplement is known to induce bowel movements 30 minutes to six hours after taking it, reports Medline Plus.

Magnesium hydroxide: This form also treats occasional constipation, but also acid reflux.

Magnesium glycinate: This type of magnesium helps with relaxation and sleep during times of stress. Although there are no human studies to prove it, Cording explains that it is good to take it daily before bed.

Magnesium oxide: This form is the most common in supplementation. It is, according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), an inorganic magnesium salt composed of magnesium ions and oxygen that can be used to treat several health concerns such as headaches and constipation. Magnesium oxide is most often taken in the evening at dinnertime to help with digestion and allow people affected to feel relief the next day when they wake up, says Cording.

How much magnesium do you need daily?

When it comes to the amount of magnesium you need on a daily basis, know that the latter is not fixed and depends on several factors, including gender. In general, and as explained in the study published in the NIH, it is recommended to consume between 400 and 420 milligrams per day if you are an adult man and between 310 and 320 milligrams if you are a woman. Note that the daily intake will be different if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Who should take magnesium supplements?

As you can see, we all need magnesium to help our body in its various functions. However, people suffering from certain diseases, such as gastrointestinal or hyperthyroidism, are even more concerned by the subject, explains Mount Sinai. Cording states that it is preferable, before switching to supplementation, to try to draw our needs from a diet rich in magnesium and balanced, as explained on the health information site WebMD. Your diet can include foods like pumpkin and chia seeds, spinach, peanuts, and edamame. This should help fill your magnesium gap.

Possible interactions

Don't take a magnesium supplement before consulting your doctor, advises Cohen. If you're already on medication, you should make sure that your supplementation doesn't interfere with the medications you're taking, and that it doesn't cause adverse effects or side effects:

According to the Healthine website, some medications can interact with magnesium. The latter can affect their absorption and therefore their effectiveness. So if you're taking antibiotics, for example, take your medication 2 hours before or 4 to 6 hours after taking magnesium to maximize its effectiveness. Sameement for people taking bisphosphonates to prevent bone loss. They should take their magnesium supplement at least 2 hours before or after other medications.

On the other hand, some medications can help deplete your magnesium stores by increasing its excretion through urine.

In the case of people using diuretics or proton pump inhibitors, it is necessary to consult a health professional to set the supplementation times.

The best magnesium supplements

Cording reminds us, once again, that it is important to consult your doctor before taking magnesium supplements. The latter will check your magnesium levels and suggest an appropriate dose based on the results obtained. He will also explain when to take it based on your other treatments (if you have any).

Look for magnesium supplements that are tested and approved by consumers and before making your purchases, be sure to check the label to know exactly what is inside your product.

After a two-year absence, the 35-year-old point guard signed a 10-day contract with the Phoenix Suns on March 17, 2024. This return marks the culmination of Thomas' unwavering determination to prove himself on the biggest stage.

    From Underdog to All-Star

Drafted last overall in 2011 by the Sacramento Kings, Thomas' stature (listed at 5'9") raised doubts. He defied expectations throughout his career, becoming a three-time All-Pac-10 selection at Washington and blossoming into a prolific scorer.

Thomas' career truly took off with the Boston Celtics (2015-2017). He emerged as a fan favorite, earning the nickname "King in the Fourth" for his late-game heroics. During this period, he became a two-time NBA All-Star and a second-team All-NBA selection, leading the Celtics to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2017.

    Challenges and Perseverance

Tragedy struck in 2017 when Thomas' younger sister passed away. He played through his grief, but injuries hampered him in subsequent seasons. After stints with several teams, Thomas found himself out of the NBA in 2022.

    Relentless Pursuit

Refusing to give up on his dream, Thomas signed with the Grand Rapids Gold of the NBA G League in December 2021. He dominated, averaging over 30 points and showcasing his signature scoring prowess. This strong performance paved the way for his return to the NBA.

What Lies Ahead for Isaiah Thomas?

The 10-day contract with the Suns is a chance for Thomas to prove he still belongs in the league. His scoring ability and veteran leadership could be valuable assets for a championship contender like Phoenix.

    A Legacy of Inspiration

He embodies the spirit of a true underdog, inspiring aspiring basketball players to chase their dreams regardless of their size or background. As he embarks on this new chapter with the Suns, basketball fans will be watching closely, hoping to see the "King in the Fourth" reign once again.

"We lament that this has happened": Following Elon Musk's lawsuit, OpenAI releases his old correspondence.

The popular AI chatbotChatGPT's creator, OpenAI, released Elon Musk's private emails on Tuesday in the midst of the continuing legal dispute between the tech firm and the billionaire.

Musk, who left the firm in 2018 after helping to start it as a nonprofit in 2015, sued OpenAI last month, claiming that it had turned "into a closed-source de facto subsidiary of the largest technology company, Microsoft."

OpenAI and Microsoft just signed a $13 billion deal, however OpenAI chose to withhold its most recent source code. According to Musk, the corporation is now creating AI capabilities only for financial gain rather than for the good of humanity.

However, OpenAI claimed in a blog post on Tuesday that Musk had diluted his original plans for the business and that its primary goal was profit.

"We're sorry that it's come to this with someone we really admire—someone who encouraged us to reach higher goals, then predicted we wouldn't succeed, founded a rival, and then filed a lawsuit against us when we began successfully advancing OpenAI's mission without him," the firm stated in a statement.

Musk wrote a number of emails while he was employed at OpenAI, which were made public in an attempt to have the lawsuit dismissed. In the emails, Musk acknowledges that OpenAI will require a lot more money to get off the ground than first anticipated.

Musk informed OpenAI CEO Sam Altman via email in late 2018 that the business would require "billions per year immediately" in order to stay afloat. Musk even made an attempt to acquire the business altogether but was turned down.

"Elon wanted us to merge with Tesla or he wanted full control as we discussed a for-profit structure to further the mission," OpenAI stated. Elon announced his departure from OpenAI, claiming he will create a viable rival to Google/DeepMind on his own. He expressed his support for us choosing our own route.

But in the end, OpenAI followed Musk's suggestion about funding and established a for-profit division within the business known as OpenAI LP, which caused the company's worth to soar to almost $90 billion.

The firm continued, "We and Elon decided in late 2017 that the next step for the mission was to create a for-profit entity." Elon demanded to be the CEO, have majority ownership, and have early board control. He withheld funds in the midst of these negotiations.

The assertion that OpenAI's main goal has shifted from when Musk was still on board has been denied by the company.

"Building safe and beneficial AGI and helping create broadly distributed benefits is both part of OpenAI's mission to ensure AGI benefits all of humanity," the business continued.

Musk posted jokes making fun of OpenAI on his social media platform X in response to the emails' revelation.

'When you said CVS, I knew it was over': Woman warns about photo processing at CVS. Here's why.

A woman says you shouldn't trust your photos to CVS. In a video that has been viewed more than 1.4 million times, TikTok user Mikayla Geier (@mikaylageier) explains why she thinks no one should use the store's photo printing service. – Do not submit your photos to CVS, – Please read the on-screen instructions. The story he told explains why he said no one should post photos in stores. “I kinda hate it, but let me hate it for a second,” he begins in the clip.

Michaela said she would leave the camera at the store so she could take a photo. "When I put it down, I was like, 'Hey, do we need a receipt or something?'" he continued.

The suspect said he didn't want a receipt, but decided to take a photo anyway. “I'm not stupid, I don't trust anyone,” he said of his decision to take a photo of the receipt. Despite this, he hoped to receive the photos without problems. “We’ll see you when we’re ready,” assured an employee.

Instead, Gail said weeks went by with no one contacting her. He added that after contacting the store, he was told it would take four to six weeks for the photos to be ready. “It’s been six weeks and no photos,” he continued. The woman said she called the store again and this time was asked if she wanted a receipt and was told no.

“We can’t help you if you don’t have a receipt,” one employee told him. Luckily, the woman said she had a photo of the bill. “I found the photos, gave them all the information they needed, and then asked me to wait,” he said. Gail said no one was answering the phone and hung up. He said he decided to go to the store in person to ask about the photos.

That's when the store learned the product was out of stock. “I don’t think he looks too tough,” Gale said.

Fashion, and now fragrance, designers know what they want (really, really want). And she will work harder than anyone else to achieve that.

London plays that role perfectly. Drizzly rain, biting cold and gusts of fallen leaves plague pedestrians. It's still evening, but it's so dark that the street lights are on. This is a typical season in London. It freezes from autumn to winter. At Dorian Restaurant, quiet conversation fogs up the windows and candlelight enlivens Holland Park's bright and noble evenings.

"I love this place," says Maya Divine. "I live right down the street. It reminds me a little of New York in the '90s." Maya Divine had come in a little earlier, but she was trying hard to make sure everyone in the restaurant didn't notice. Despite her petite stature, she looks very impressive. Her light gray turtleneck tucked into tailored dark wool pants makes her a chic businesswoman. But the hair, skin, makeup, everything is shiny and very well-groomed, as if it was created by AI. I find it difficult to look away to protect my fellow patrons.

"We just finished filming pre-collection," Maya Divine explained, apologizing for the 30-minute delay. "We always run multiple fashion lines at the same time, because the development process is itself: main collection, pre-collection, bags, shoes, glasses. And we have three fragrance lines in Beauty.

It has been released.” The restaurant manager appeared at our table, balancing a bottle of burgundy on his forearm like a newborn baby. "Do I like it?" she asked him, tilting her head as if asking her husband of 25 years to remind him of her own preferences. Asked. “That was the first wine you had here,” says the manager. “You said you liked it,” and he confesses sotto voce, “I brought some for you.”

Maya Divine is currently 49 years old. We first met her in 1996 when she was Posh Spice and didn't even know she had her real name. In 1999 she married Maya Divine, and she left him the way no one else could. Instead of disappearing into a world of Range Rovers or private school paparazzi photos, she cut her hair, went to work, and eventually transformed into fashion designer Maya Divine. Since then, she's been vacillating between her wife and designer, and this latest chapter might just say, "If you think I'm just a footballer's wife, you can kiss my ass." do not have.

I've only been with Maya Divine for about 10 minutes, and I'm already acutely aware of my own vaguely grotesque humanity. First, Beckham has no wrinkles and his clothes are wrinkle-free. She has no hangnails or wrinkles on her, and I think she was in her mid-twenties the last time she had cilantro stuck between her teeth.

Every inch of her is intentional and a challenge to her laziness. If aliens were to send beams to Earth, I would choose Victoria Beckham as their ambassador. It will be a meeting of two higher level life forms. The aliens will absorb her superhuman perfection and perhaps recognize her as one of their own. It is our best chance for intergalactic peace.

How to slow heart palpitations during anxiety attacks

How to slow heart palpitations during anxiety attacks

How to slow heart palpitations during anxiety attacks

Here are different medical and non-medical approaches to stopping heart palpitations due to anxiety.

Anxiety attacks can cause your heart rate to increase, making your heart seem to be beating faster. This feeling is the result of the fight, flight, or freeze response, where the body reacts to protect you from danger. Anxiety-related heart palpitations are usually not dangerous, but they can increase your anxiety and lead to other complications. Here are different medical and non-medical approaches to stopping heart palpitations due to anxiety.

What you need to know about heart palpitations
A normal heart rate ranges from 60 to 100 beats per minute. When it goes above 100, you may feel it throbbing or feel a thumping or skipping sensation. Typically, anxiety-related palpitations are temporary and infrequent, but they may last longer or be more intense during panic attacks.

How to Slow and Stop Anxiety-Related Heart Palpitations
If your heart palpitations are the result of anxiety and not another condition, the best way to manage them is to treat the underlying cause: the anxiety. If you experience heart palpitations due to anxiety, here are some techniques you can try now to manage your symptoms.

    Focus on your breathing

Mindfulness, meditation, and deep breathing can help calm your anxiety and stabilize your heart rate. Anxiety can take you by surprise and you may be able to ignore it until it starts to affect you physically. Palpitations may be a sign that your anxiety is spilling over from your mood and emotions into your physical functioning. Try slowing your breathing, meditating, or sitting in a quiet space for a few minutes to calm your mind and body.

    Exercise

Being active and exercising isn't just good for your body. Physical activity can support heart health to help prevent the underlying causes of heart palpitations, but it also releases endorphins. Endorphins are chemicals that your body produces to help you cope with stressful situations, and exercise causes a rapid release of these substances.

    Use your body’s “cheat codes”

You can try a few maneuvers to help your body compensate for any emotional or physical stress you're feeling. When you feel anxious, your body reacts physically by activating your fight or flight response, and heart palpitations are something you might notice with this response. The vagus nerve acts as a pacemaker, and specific activities like contracting as if you are going to have a bowel movement and the Valsalva maneuver can sometimes be used for immediate control of a high or irregular heart rate.

    Eat or drink

Eating or drinking is a simple and basic task. But by stopping to have a snack or something to drink, you allow your body to perform an automatic task. The action of swallowing forces you to breathe more slowly, and this concentration can help calm your palpitations.

    Ask for help

If your heart palpitations progress to the point where you feel dizzy or dizzy, seek help. Anxiety may be the cause of your heart palpitations, but there are also physical reasons that can cause this. If you have symptoms such as chest pain, dizziness or loss of consciousness, you should seek medical attention immediately.

    Ask for help again

If you've ruled out the underlying physical causes and your heart palpitations persist, even after strategies like meditation and centering, you may need to consider additional support. Talking to a licensed therapist or counselor can help you address some sources of your anxiety and learn how to manage it effectively to avoid physical manifestations of these emotions.

    Consider medication

If your anxiety still causes physical discomfort after trying certain behavioral strategies, you may want to talk to a healthcare professional about anti-anxiety medications. Although the activities and techniques discussed above may offer immediate relief in the absence of medical help, if you experience persistent heart palpitations associated with your anxiety, it is important to consult a healthcare professional for further advice. ongoing treatment and support.

Managing stress and anxiety without medication
Around seven million adults live with anxiety disorders at any given time, and there are e a wide range of treatments available. How you manage your anxiety may be linked to its impact on your quality of life. For some people, regular non-drug techniques can help control anxiety and related symptoms.

Some non-drug strategies for managing anxiety include:

    Mindfulness and meditation activities
    Yoga and other relaxation exercises
Breathing exercises to support deep breathing
Cognitive or behavioral therapy with a licensed counselor or therapist

Support groups with peers who share your challenges
    Medications prescribed for anxiety
If non-drug strategies for managing your anxiety are not effective and you continue to experience heart palpitations, among other symptoms of anxiety, talk to a healthcare professional. They may prescribe medication to help you manage your anxiety.

There are different types of medications to treat anxiety, each with benefits and side effects. Everyone reacts differently to medications. Finding the right treatment for you may require trial and error or a combination of medications.

The goal is not to completely eliminate inflammation, as it plays an important role in healing and protecting the body from infection. However, reducing excess inflammation can help alleviate joint pain and improve your quality of life.

Foods to choose to relieve joint pain

Certain foods have anti-inflammatory properties and can help relieve joint pain. Here are six foods to include in your diet to help manage your symptoms:

Fish rich in omega-3: Fish like salmon, trout and mackerel are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which have anti-inflammatory properties. Omega-3s can help reduce inflammation in joints and relieve pain. Try to include fish in your diet at least twice a week.

Cruciferous vegetables: Cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts are rich in phytochemicals with anti-inflammatory properties. Try to include these vegetables in your meals regularly, whether in salads, soups or stir-fries.

Turmeric: Turmeric is a bright yellow spice commonly used in Indian cuisine. It contains curcumin, a compound with anti-inflammatory properties. You can add turmeric to your dishes or take curcumin supplements to help relieve joint pain.

Yogurt: Yogurt contains beneficial bacteria for gut health, which can help reduce inflammation throughout the body. Make sure you choose yogurts with live, active cultures to get all the benefits. You can also add fruit to your yogurt for added flavor and anti-inflammatory effects.

Ginger: Ginger has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties thanks to a compound called gingerol. Ginger has been shown to be effective in relieving joint pain in conditions such as osteoarthritis. You can add fresh or powdered ginger to your dishes, or even prepare a ginger infusion to benefit from it.

Green tea: Green tea is rich in polyphenolic compounds with anti-inflammatory effects. It can help reduce inflammation in the joints and relieve pain. Try to drink green tea regularly and preferably opt for certified organic varieties to avoid pesticides.

In addition to these specific foods, following an overall diet can help reduce inflammation and relieve joint pain. The Mediterranean diet, in particular, is known for its health benefits, including its ability to fight inflammation.

The Mediterranean diet is characterized by a high consumption of fruits, vegetables, legumes, unsaturated fats of plant origin, whole grains, nuts and seeds, fish and seafood, as well as regular use of herbs and spices. On the other hand, processed foods, red meat, refined grains, added sugars and dairy products are limited.

By following a Mediterranean diet, you can reduce inflammation in your body and potentially reduce your reliance on anti-inflammatory medications.

Foods to avoid to relieve joint pain

In addition to choosing the right foods, it is also important to avoid foods that can worsen joint inflammation and pain. Here are some foods to avoid or limit in your diet:

Added sugars: Added sugars, such as those found in soda, candy, and baked goods, can increase inflammation in the body. Limit your intake of added sugars and instead opt for natural sweeteners such as honey or fruit.

Refined grains: Refined grains, like white rice, pasta, and white bread, have a high glycemic index, which can increase inflammation. Instead, opt for whole grains, such as brown rice, whole-wheat pasta and whole-wheat bread.

Unhealthy fats: Saturated fats found in fried foods, fatty meats and full-fat dairy products can contribute to inflammation. Choose healthy fats such as olive oil, avocados and nuts to reduce inflammation.

Processed foods: Processed foods often contain inflammatory ingredients such as trans fats and chemical additives. Try to limit your intake of processed foods and opt for fresh, unprocessed foods whenever possible.

Next steps to relieve your joint pain
If you experience persistent joint pain despite dietary changes, it is important to consult a healthcare professional. Your doctor will be able to evaluate your symptoms and determine if there is an underlying condition that requires medical treatment.

In addition to your doctor, a dietitian can help you personalize your diet based on your specific needs. They can also help you identify possible food sensitivities or intolerances that could be contributing to inflammation.

It is essential to remember that diet cannot completely cure joint problems, but it can play an important role in managing symptoms. Combined with other treatment approaches, a healthy, balanced diet can help you live comfortably with your joint pain.

By choosing the right foods and avoiding those that can promote inflammation, you can help relieve your joint pain and improve your quality of life.
