"We lament that this has happened": Following Elon Musk's lawsuit, OpenAI releases his old correspondence.

The popular AI chatbotChatGPT's creator, OpenAI, released Elon Musk's private emails on Tuesday in the midst of the continuing legal dispute between the tech firm and the billionaire.

Musk, who left the firm in 2018 after helping to start it as a nonprofit in 2015, sued OpenAI last month, claiming that it had turned "into a closed-source de facto subsidiary of the largest technology company, Microsoft."

OpenAI and Microsoft just signed a $13 billion deal, however OpenAI chose to withhold its most recent source code. According to Musk, the corporation is now creating AI capabilities only for financial gain rather than for the good of humanity.

However, OpenAI claimed in a blog post on Tuesday that Musk had diluted his original plans for the business and that its primary goal was profit.

"We're sorry that it's come to this with someone we really admire—someone who encouraged us to reach higher goals, then predicted we wouldn't succeed, founded a rival, and then filed a lawsuit against us when we began successfully advancing OpenAI's mission without him," the firm stated in a statement.

Musk wrote a number of emails while he was employed at OpenAI, which were made public in an attempt to have the lawsuit dismissed. In the emails, Musk acknowledges that OpenAI will require a lot more money to get off the ground than first anticipated.

Musk informed OpenAI CEO Sam Altman via email in late 2018 that the business would require "billions per year immediately" in order to stay afloat. Musk even made an attempt to acquire the business altogether but was turned down.

"Elon wanted us to merge with Tesla or he wanted full control as we discussed a for-profit structure to further the mission," OpenAI stated. Elon announced his departure from OpenAI, claiming he will create a viable rival to Google/DeepMind on his own. He expressed his support for us choosing our own route.

But in the end, OpenAI followed Musk's suggestion about funding and established a for-profit division within the business known as OpenAI LP, which caused the company's worth to soar to almost $90 billion.

The firm continued, "We and Elon decided in late 2017 that the next step for the mission was to create a for-profit entity." Elon demanded to be the CEO, have majority ownership, and have early board control. He withheld funds in the midst of these negotiations.

The assertion that OpenAI's main goal has shifted from when Musk was still on board has been denied by the company.

"Building safe and beneficial AGI and helping create broadly distributed benefits is both part of OpenAI's mission to ensure AGI benefits all of humanity," the business continued.

Musk posted jokes making fun of OpenAI on his social media platform X in response to the emails' revelation.
