Why should you no longer sleep next to your cell phone?
Sending a WhatsApp message or checking your social networks before falling asleep has become a habit for many people, there are even some who can't sleep a wink if they don't put their phones under their pillows.
Why not sleep next to your phone anymore?
Putting on your pajamas, turning off the light, getting into bed and picking up your cell phone is routine for many of us, whether it's sending a last message or taking a quick look at social media, but what could happen?
Believe it or not, the damage can go beyond sleep quality.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), mobile phones are low power radio frequency transmitters. However, they operate in a range between 450 and 2700 MHz with power ranging from 0.1 to 2 watts, but transmit power only when turned on.
A person who uses a cell phone at a distance of 30 to 40 centimeters from their body will be less exposed to radio waves than someone who holds their cell phone closer to their head, especially if they keep their phone nearby at night.
What harm can cell phone use before bedtime cause?
First of all, the blue light and radio frequency waves emitted by your cell phone or electronic devices can alter the quality of your sleep just by being turned on and having them next to your bed, as they reduce the production of melatonin, the hormone that induces sleep and changes heart rate.
You practically stay awake even when your eyes are closed because blue light from cell phones emits wavelengths similar to daylight, which means your brain thinks it's not yet. time to sleep. Result: you sleep poorly at night and therefore feel tired during the day, describes a study published in the Journal of Behavioral Addictions.
On the other hand, our productivity levels are reduced throughout the day. So the best thing to do is to turn off all electronic devices at least 30 minutes before going to sleep. It may sound like overkill, but give it a try and you'll sleep well.
You gain weight if you use your cell phone before sleeping
This goes hand in hand with the quality of sleep, because when we don't get a good night's rest, the hormones that regulate appetite, namely ghrelin and leptin, go through an imbalance that results in a lack of energy for the day. This is why we tend to eat more to compensate. However, if we do not burn the calories we consume, weight gain is likely to be more significant.
