Down syndrome, commonly known as trisomy 21, is the most common chromosomal disorder. In France, about 35,000 people have trisomy 21 and their life expectancy has increased considerably in recent decades, from 25 in 1983 to 60 years today. Discover in this article the story of the couple Pilling, with trisomy 21, who has coped with the criticism of others and lead a good life as a couple.
Maryanne and Tommy Pilling have just celebrated their 24th wedding anniversary. What makes this couple so special is that they have had to overcome many challenges, even critics, over the years because they both had Down syndrome.

The duo, who first met at a local training center for people with learning disabilities, had been dating for about 18 months when Tommy asked Maryanne to marry her. A few months later, in July 1995, the couple celebrated their union at a religious ceremony in Essex, surrounded by supportive friends and their families. "They love each other a lot, respect each other and are too honest to each other," said Linda Newman, Maryanne's sister.
But not everyone agreed with the couple's decision to marry about two decades ago. Newman says his mother was tried for giving the couple a blessing.

But 22 years later, Tommy, 59, and Maryanne, 45, say their relationship is stronger than ever.

Newman has created a Facebook page for his sister and brother-in-law, and their love affair has earned them thousands of fans around the world. The couple lives independently in Essex, UK.

What is Trisomy 21?
People with trisomy 21 are born with an extra chromosome. Chromosomes are clusters of genes, and the body depends on the exact number of genes. Because of trisomy 21, this extra chromosome causes a series of problems that affect you mentally and physically.

With the help of a series of screenings and tests, health professionals can detect Down syndrome before or after birth.

Some of the common physical features of this condition are: low muscle tone, short stature, tilt up the eyes and a deep crease in the center of the palm of the hand. Each person with trisomy 21 is a unique individual and may have these characteristics to different degrees or not at all.
Perspectives
A person with trisomy 21 can do a lot of things that the so-called "normal" people do. Children may need more time to develop skills such as walking and talking, but with stimulation, they can acquire life skills, go to school and, in some cases, to college.

People with trisomy 21 need friendships and relationships. Some will live as a couple or get married and have an independent life.

It should be noted that if one of the partners has Down syndrome, there is a risk of 35-50% risk for his or her children.

The average life expectancy is about 60 years, but many people with trisomy are now over 70 years old.

Quality educational programs, a stimulating family environment, good health care and positive support from family, friends and a close community allow people with Down Syndrome to lead fulfilling and productive lives.
