Obesity: fat shaming would prevent weight loss
Words heavy consequences, even toxic. "There is a widely held belief that the more we stigmatize people overweight, the more motivates to find the line - in the manner of an electroshock. But it's the other way around: people who are discriminated against lock in on themselves, consume more calories and stop doing physical activity. It's a vicious circle that has very real consequences for their health, "says Rebecca Pearl, a researcher at the University of Pennsylvania and author of a study published in Obesity.
The team of the latter measured the level of fat shaming of which 159 women, obese and mostly African-American, were the subject of everyday life and the impact on their morals. They then benefited from a complete medical check-up. As a result, the risk of metabolic syndrome is multiplied by three for those who felt "much" stigmatized on a daily basis with regard to their weight. For the latter, the risks of having an above average level of triglycerides are six times higher.
The researchers conclude, "The entourage, the medical staff and the media must understand that humiliation is not an effective strategy to induce positive change in the overweight person"
