SUGAR drinks, what impact on our heart?

It has long been believed that the fats in our diet are the main cause of cardiovascular disease. Today, many studies have questioned this belief. If we do not remove an excess of saturated fatty acids that are harmful to our health, our consumption of sugar is just as worrying.

For example, a new study published in March 2019 in the journal Circulation of the American Heart Association, showed that consuming sugary or sweetened beverages on a daily basis could lead to a risk of developing cardiovascular disease prematurely. To reach this conclusion, researchers at the Harvard T. Chan School of Public Health studied 37,716 men and 80,647 women between 1980 and 2014.

But if "the excess of sugary drinks is deleterious and can lead to cardiovascular disease, this is not so simple," says Béatrice de Reynal. "Indeed, this study takes old epidemiological data, between 1980 and 2014, whose object was not, at the beginning, to work on this link sugar-cardiovascular diseases. It is important to take it with hindsight, because it would have been necessary to analyze all the daily contributions in various sugars (syrup of glucose-fructose, fruits, honey ...), in alcohol, in coffee, in tea, in additives, in preservatives, in dyes, compared to the use of plastic or glass bottles ... This study done in the United States does not show the differences between our countries either. Drinks in the US contain mostly harmful glucose-fructose syrups, when there is sugar in those sold in France. "
